Barney's River Smelt
This fly was created to mimic the baitfish of Pictou County; particularly Barney's River. Early spring fishing on Barney's can bring ample opportunity to catch big sea-run fish. These fish move in and out of the river, particularly the estuary, feeding heavily on baitfish. Smelts that run in Pictou have a pink and purple, combined with an olive hue. Thus, I created this smelt fly imitation. An outstanding producer when baitfish is present. |

The Rifle Ranger Smelt
This fly was developed in 2005 out of what I thought was the Northeast Smelt. Prior to 2005, I had never seen the NE Smelt; however, it was described to me by a gentlemen I met on the Sackville River. It turns out, that the wings of a Northeast Smelt were Olive, not green. That being said, it was a fantastic mistake. The Mean Green, or Rifle Ranger produced one of the best evenings of fishing to date. This is my go-to-fly for the spring. An excellent pattern for the Sackville River, and the River Phillip. Tied in smaller versions, it is a superb Sea trout fly. |
